Gorbitz, a large housing estate in the west of Dresden, is an arrival quarter, particularly in the northern part, where different realities of life come together. This diversity brings with it special energies, dynamics and potentials that call for innovative formats to address issues of coexistence and the appropriation of public spaces.
Stigmatized and written off: Gorbitz is often described as a social hotspot - between prejudice and neglected reality. But we see it differently! Behind the dreary prefabricated buildings hides a lively district full of stories and heart.
With this video documentary, we tried to capture the festival that took place in August 2024. It shows very well what needs are present in the young district and what faces are hidden behind them. Together with Lucie Friederike Mueller and Alex Mutschke, we were able to document the 6-day project and supplement it with exciting interviews from the neighborhood.
The project focused on reactivating a sports field owned by Vonovia that had been derelict for years. The aim was to actively shape and revitalize this site together with residents and local initiatives. To this end, an open construction site was set up on site for a week, offering space for people to meet, exchange ideas and create together. Low-threshold formats, such as the neighborhood kitchen for cooking and eating together, created a unifying social practice where people from different backgrounds came together. In addition, there were a variety of activities such as sports activities, a senior coffee klatsch, singing, games and the "Zwinger Olympics", which promoted togetherness in the neighborhood.
